Trip to Andros Island

I went to Clark Montessori for middle school. An important aspect of going to a Montessori is the element of learning from the real world and applying what we are learning in school. In 8th grade, it was custom for each class to raise money for a trip to Andros Island in the Bahamas. We spent two week preparing for the trip at school by researching marine biology. The morning we traveled to Andros, I woke up very early and my mom drove me to the airport. This trip was unique in the sense it was the first time many students, including me, left the country especially without their family. We did not have any contact with our families for the eight days we were in Andros. This allowed us to begin learning independence as young adults and reflect on ourselves and what we want out of life. Both this reflection and studying marine biology in Andros opened my eyes to my love of science. After this trip, I began pursuing this love by taking most of the science classes offered in high school and I decided I would major in biology on the pre med track. I am grateful for getting to experience this trip because it has set the trajectory of my life.

I chose to share these photos because they show the exploration and learning that I experienced in Andros. The first picture on the top shows me journaling about my experience and completing work. The picture on the top right shows me examining and dissecting an organism. The picture on the bottom left shows some of the marine life we saw when snorkeling. The two pictures on the bottom right show the notes I took during lessons of blue holes and coral polyps.
