Experience 6:
Anatomy, Medicine, and Art in Renaissance Italy

Spring Semester 2026, I took the a study tour class through UC International called Anatomy, Medicine, and Art in Renaissance Italy. This class entails a once weekly class where we learned about Renaissance Art, influential individuals, and the development of medicine, then at the conclusion of the course we traveled to Italy from May 5th-May 14th. At the beginning of the class we watched documentaries and researched what the Renaissance. Next, each student was assigned a notable and influential individual who played a role in the medical Renaissance. My presentation was on Bartolomeo Eustachi who studied anatomy, discovered several anatomical structures, and published plates depicting these structures. Next, we were put into groups to present on the history, activities, and significance of each city we will visit. These presentations allowed me to get an idea of what to do in my freetime and understand the background of each city. To conclude the class, we met at my professors, Dr. Giffin's, house where we enjoyed Italian food and discussed Italian culture. While in Italy, we went to Padua, Florence, Venice and Bologna and toured museums and anatomical theaters. I really enjoyed the structure of this class as it was very laid back and allowed us to gain background about Renaissance Italy, Art, and Medicine from our own research as well as others presentations, then we were able to apply this knowledge to enhance our experiences while in Italy.
